About The
Conference
The Seventh EMPHNET Regional Conference adopt the theme “Towards Public Health Resilience in the Eastern Mediterranean Region: Breaking Barriers.” As COVID-19 has overwhelmed health systems worldwide, debates around resilience have become more urgent, and there is a need to better understand the elements of national responses through a resilience lens. Latest challenges posed by COVID-19 as a global crisis has disproportionately affected public health systems worldwide, including those in our Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR).. The Conference will, therefore, offer a space for public health experts from across the region and beyond to critically discuss the new lessons learnt from the past years and explore new opportunities to reach to more resilient health systems to break those barriers.

10th Anniversary
This year, the Seventh EMPHNET Regional Conference coincides with the 10th Anniversary of EMPHNET. Ten years passed on the establishment of our regional network. This indeed is a milestone we are proud of, as it is testimony to the hard work and dedication of each and every team member, every partner, and each FETP in our region that has contributed to the work of EMPHNET.
We are proud of what was achieved to date, yet we are fully aware that growth is an ongoing process. With this understanding, we look forward to more decades of achievements to come.
This occasion has inspired us to dedicate a special portion of our conference agenda to it. Therefore, we will dedicate a session to celebrating this milestone. We will take you on a journey where we will be showcasing the milestones worth celebrating and the achievements made over the past 10 years. You will see firsthand through photos, videos, and more the different milestones we had achieved together in terms of supporting FETPs in the region, the area of disease control, the area of emergency response, the area of public health protection and promotion, ICT, Networking, and lots more.

EMPHNET holds its regional conference on a biennial basis, driven by the inspiration to create a space for knowledge and experience exchange among public health experts from the Eastern Mediterranean Region and around the globe. Over the past decade, hundreds of residents and graduates from field epidemiology training programs (FETPs) to other public health individuals from the region have enriched the public health scene with insights from the field. Our conferences enabled discussions on a wide range topics that are relevant to the region. So far, six conferences have been held.
The First EMPHNET Regional Conference
This Conference was held less than a year after the establishment of EMPHNET as a joint event with TEPHINET’s Fourth Bi-regional Conference and the Seventh Conference of the Jordan Public Health Association. During this regional Conference, the topic of mental health was given special attention after being relatively ignored in the region. The Conference took place in 2009 in Amman, Jordan.
The Second EMPHNET Regional Conference
In Sharm Al Sheikh, Egypt in 2011, EMPHNET and TEPHINET collaborated to organize the 2nd EMPHNET / 5th TEPHINET Scientific Regional Conference. Over 130 epidemiologists and public health experts participated from Middle East and North Africa Region (MENA). More than 80 scientific abstracts were presented.
The Third EMPHNET Regional Conference
This Conference took place in Marrakech, Morocco in 2013, and was held under the theme "Public Health Surveillance in the 21st Century,” placing emphasis on communicable and noncommunicable diseases that pose vital concern for most of the participating countries. There were 176 participants representing the KSA, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Morocco, the UAE, and Sudan.
The Fourth EMPHNET Regional Conference
This edition of the conference was held the theme “Public Health in the Region: Challenges and Opportunities.” The Conference took place in Aqaba, Jordan, in 2015. Throughout the four days of the event, 200 participants from 18 countries attended the conference sessions.
The Fifth EMPHNET Regional Conference
EMPHNET adopted “Regional Contributions to Global Health Development” as its conference theme to focus on the efforts made by countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) in protecting the health of communities in the region and promoting health beyond their national borders. Held in Marrakech, Morocco, in 2016, the Conference saw the participation of FETP residents and graduates from Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Yemen.
The Sixth EMPHNET Regional Conference
Taking place in Amman, Jordan in 2018, the Conference was held under the theme Innovative Approaches: Adapting to the Current EMR Context. Representations from the region were from twenty countries, ten of which, have Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs): Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tunisia, and Yemen.

The Seventh EMPHNET Regional Conference is a networking space for experts from the Eastern Mediterranean Region and around the globe to engage in dialogue on pressing public health issues affecting the region.
